Progressive solos for the tuba

This challenge is for advanced middle and high school tuba players.

I have written six unaccompanied solos for tuba - “Progressive Solos for the Tuba.”

All of these are free and the first “level” is posted below.

To access the next level, please record yourself playing the first level and email it to Parrish@ulm.edu. You should record Level 1 to receive Level 2, etc.

Stay tuned for information about competitions, extra “levels",” and a “training level” if you are having trouble playing Level 1.

“CHEAT CODES” FOR LEVEL 1: ROAD TRIP -

  1. Slur the tongued passages. If you are having issues with intervals, your tongue might be getting in the way and you might not be using your air effectively. Slurring takes the tongue out of the equation (for practice). You should add the tongue back in and allow your air to work similarly as if you were slurring.

  2. Practice with the metronome. The syncopated rhythms (the rhythms that are not on the downbeats) are “entry-level",” but should be played with precision.

  3. Measures 35-47 are designed to challenge your breathing. If you have issues with taking in full, relaxed breaths, this section might be tough for you. Use it as an opportunity to improve your breathing.

  4. Be aware of the dynamics, but realize that they are a starting point. This is a solo, unaccompanied tuba solo - which means that it is just YOU. Do not sacrifice air support to play softly and do not be afraid to ‘go for it’ during the louder sections (with good tone).

Daily routines

Below is my daily routine packets for high school/ early college students.

Each element of the daily routine has about a half-page explanation followed by an exercise.

The exercises can be altered/ adapted as needed.

When establishing a daily routine, the most important aspect is consistency - play every note with your best, most relaxed sound.
